These are the two months we run our Kashmir group departures, and they give you two completely different trips. Knowing which one suits your family matters more than the price difference.
January — deep winter
Srinagar sits around -2°C to 7°C. Gulmarg is properly under snow, and the Gondola runs through fresh powder. Dal Lake partially freezes at the edges. If your family has never seen snow, this is the month that delivers it.
Pack heavy: thermals, a waterproof outer layer, gloves, woollen socks and proper shoes with grip. Cotton clothes are useless here. Hotels run heating and houseboats use bukharis, so indoors is comfortable.
March — the thaw
Srinagar climbs to around 6°C to 17°C. Snow stays on the higher slopes at Gulmarg and Sonamarg, but the valley starts turning green. Almond blossom opens in Srinagar towards the end of the month. Roads are more reliable than in January.
March suits families with small children or elderly members who would struggle with deep cold, and still want snow in the photographs.
Which should you pick?
Want snow everywhere and don’t mind the cold — take January. Want pleasant days with snow still on the peaks — take March. Both departures cover Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg, Doodhpathri and a houseboat night on Dal Lake.
